Summer internships for rising juniors and seniors majoring in science, technology, engineering and mathematics


The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors a ten-week summer internship program for rising juniors and seniors majoring in homeland security-related science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to conduct research in DHS mission-relevant research areas at federal research facilities located across the country. The program aims to engage a diverse, educated, and skilled pool of scientists and engineers in HS-STEM issues and to promote long-term enhancement of the HS-STEM workforce.

Each award provides a stipend of $500 per week, paid every two weeks, plust transportation costs for one round trip between the student’s school or home address and his or her assigned federal research facility, with some possible limitations.

Candidates must be U.S. citizens at the time of application and enrolled full-time as undergraduates at an accredited U.S. two- or four-year college or university. They must be at least 18 years of age upon beginning their internships, and must be planning to enroll for their third or fourth year of college upon completing their internships. They must be majoring in a STEM field with an interest in a DHS research area, must have maintained a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3 on a four-point scale, and must have long-term career goals aligned with DHS’s mission and objectives.

Applications are evaluated by DHS and representatives of the host sites where candidates with to intern, but DHS determines which students are selected to participate in the internship program. Student and host site preferences are taken into consideration.
