Funding for learning Mandarin in Taiwan in the summer

The Taiwan Ministry of Education’s Huayu Enrichment Scholarships (HES) support international students pursuing Huayu (Mandarin proficiency) courses in the Republic of China, both to increase their understanding of Taiwanese culture and society and to promote mutual understanding between Taiwan and the international community.

Each scholarship provides a monthly stipend. Enrichment courses ordinarily include a summer term and short-term classes lasting between three months and one year.

International applicants above the age of 18 who possess at least a high school diploma, have shown excellent academic performance, and are in good disciplinary standing may apply. Students from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong, and Macao are not eligible.

Recipients must study at a registered Mandarin Language Center approved by the Ministry of Education, and must apply for admission according to the centers’ regulations. Recipients are also expected to take at least fifteen hours of language courses each week, which may be augmented through cultural visits and other self-initiated learning activities.
