Nathalia Tavares, CC’23, has been selected for the 2023 - 2024 Congress Bundestag Youth Exchange Fellowships for Young Professionals (CBYX). Celebrating its 40th anniversary as a joint program of the German Bundestag and U.S. Congress, CBYX provides 75 American and 75 German young leaders the opportunity to spend a year in each other’s countries studying, interning, and living with host families.

A native New Yorker, Nathalia majored in ethnicity and race studies at Columbia, specializing in protest performing arts, or how different art mediums have historically supported social movements and/or led to social change. She was drawn to the CBYX for Young Professionals Fellowship in Germany because of its multipronged cultural exchange, which includes stays in multiple German cities, intensive language immersion at home, school, and work. Now one month into her program, Nathalia is currently living in Saarbrüken and will soon relocate to Mainz, Germany.

Long term, Nathalia will continue to provide a platform for underrepresented theatre artists to share their stories and looks forward to further building her understanding for how art and artists are contributing to the intersection of the arts and social justice in Germany throughout her CBYX placement working in theater production.

Nathalia offered early reflections into her CBYX experience, “As a young graduate, global fellowships can be a fantastic way to transition from identifying as a student to a working professional because they allow you to take the lead on deciding what you want your life to be, all while still having a structure in place to guide you…I have been pushed more than ever to be independent and proactive, allowing me to shape my life exactly how I want it to look like, both personally and professionally.”
