The Jarvis and Constance Doctorow Fellowship, established in 2005, provides one graduating Columbia College senior annually with funding for one year of post-baccalaureate study at the University of Oxford in a social science or related field. The Fellow will live at St. Edmund Hall. Each fellowship provides for direct payment of its recipient’s University and College fees, plus a stipend for travel and living expenses.
The selection committee considers academic distinction and the suitability of the proposed course to be the most important considerations in evaluating candidates, but each candidate’s ability to contribute to his or her community in the U.K. will also be considered, as will the potential for the fellowship to be a truly broadening experience. Some preference is also given for candidates with an interest in the broad sphere of conflict transformation, either during their time at Oxford or beyond. Finalists for this award will be interviewed, in person, by the selection committee.
The recipients of the Doctorow must take up the fellowship for the academic year immediately following graduation from the College. No deferrals will be granted.
Eligibility
Current seniors in Columbia College are eligible, provided they are in good academic and disciplinary standing.
Candidates must also apply separately for admission to their department at Oxford, and the course of study must be admissible to St. Edmund Hall, as this is where the Fellow will take up residence (you should indicate St. Edmund Hall as your preferred College within your Oxford program application). Oxford academic program deadlines vary and it is encouraged, but not required, to apply for the earliest deadline available.
Fellowship awards are contingent on your admission to the degree program proposed within your application and your acceptance to St. Edmund Hall.
