Graduate support and summer internships to students pursuing graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering and mathematics

The GEM Consortium Fellowships Program provides graduate fellowship support and summer internships to students pursuing graduate degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields at consortium member institutions. GEM offers three specific fellowship programs:

  • M.S. Engineering Fellowships, which aim to promote the benefits of a masters degree within industry;
  • Ph.D. Engineering Fellowships, which aim to increase the number of underrepresented minority students who pursue doctoral degrees in engineering disciplines; and
  • Ph.D. Science Fellowships, which aim to increase the number of underrepresented minority students who pursue doctoral degrees in natural science disciplines.

Fellowships at the master’s level provide full tuition and fee waivers from the GEM member university, a living stipend, and up to two paid summer internships with a GEM member employer. Fellowships at the doctoral level provide full tuition and fee waivers from the GEM member university, a generous living stipend in the first year, living stipends from the GEM member university in subsequent years, and at least one paid summer internship with a GEM member employer.

Candidates for each program must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and have completed at least a bachelor’s degree by the time they would take up their fellowship. Candidates must apply to at least three GEM member institutions, and the program strongly recommends that all candidates take relevant GRE exams required by their programs early enough for scores to be factored into selection. GEM also targets individuals who are members of three minority groups underrepresented in STEM fields—Native American Indians, African Americans, and Hispanic Americans.

Please note: while URF is happy to work with Columbia undergraduates and alumni of undergraduate divisions on GEM application materials, if you are seeking a fee waiver or have other questions about eligibility requirements, please contact Columbia's GEM Fellowship representative, Gabrielle Gannon, gg2708@columbia.edu, 212-851-7674.
