Term: Academic Year

Provides exceptional American students with two years of postgraduate study at any participating university in the U.K.

Marshall Scholarships provide for two years of postgraduate study at any participating university in the United Kingdom, with the possibility of a third year for students continuing for a doctorate. In special circumstances, students may apply for a one-year scholarship. There are few restrictions as to field of study, but applicants must be academically prepared to undertake their proposed course.

The total value of a Marshall Scholarship varies according to a scholar’s selected university and degree course. It includes payment of tuition fees, a personal stipend to cover living expenses and travel to and from the U.S.

Marshall applicants must:

  • be U.S. citizens;
  • be graduating seniors or alumni/ae who have graduated within the past two years; and
  • have a minimum 3.7 GPA.
  • not have studied for, or hold a degree or degree-equivalent qualification from a British University or GCSE or A Levels taken at a school in the UK.

Selection Criteria

The Marshall seeks students who demonstrate:

  • academic merit;
  • leadership potential; and
  • ambassadorial potential.

Selection committees look for candidates who have the potential to excel as scholars, leaders, and contributors to U.K.-U.S. understanding. Selectors also look for strong motivation and seriousness of purpose, including the presentation of a specific and realistic academic program in the U.K.

University nomination

Columbia University may nominate up to 24 undergraduates and recent alumni/ae of Columbia College, Columbia Engineering and the School of General Studies for consideration each year. Students may not apply directly for this fellowship without first having been nominated by Columbia.

Register your candidacy with Columbia online here by clicking "Start Your Application." Then complete your official application through the Marshall portal here no later than the internal deadline. Your letters of recommendation should be submitted by your recommenders directly to the Marshall online portal.
