All majors are eligible to apply, and past applicants reflect a wide range of studies (e.g., psychology, East Asian studies, business, political science). Japanese language fluency is neither a requirement for application, nor selection (noting, there are many English language programs in Japan, some of which are sponsored by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT)
All matriculated Columbia University graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to apply, provided they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- 35 years of age or younger;
- Lack an adequate financial base to support their intended study in Japan;
- Residents of Japan, who have received education in Japan, are ineligible for this opportunity;
All undergraduate, graduate, or doctoral program at universities in Japan, as well as non-matriculated programs and exchange programs are accepted. However, if the tuition/fees are not directly paid towards the Japanese University/program, the Foundation will not cover tuition in its scholarship;
The successful applicant will need to apply directly to the Japanese university of his/her choice for admission;
Additional requirements may be listed on the application materials.
