Support for tuition and summer research for students from disadvantaged backgrounds committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral and social science health-related fields

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Undergraduate Scholarship Program offers competitive scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The program provides scholarship support, paid summer research training at the NIH, and paid employment at the NIH after graduation.

Each scholarship provides up to $20,000 per academic year in tuition, educational expenses, and reasonable living expenses to recipients. Scholarships are awarded for one year and can be renewed for up to four years.

For each full or partial year of scholarship support, recipients are committed to two NIH service obligations, each of which continues the recipient’s training: a paid ten-week summer laboratory experience in an NIH facility (which includes formal mentoring and seminar components), and a year of postgraduate employment in an NIH research laboratory.

Scholarship candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents enrolled or accepted for enrollment as full-time students at an accredited four-year undergraduate institution in the U.S. Candidates must have a current undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or better on a four-point scale, or be within the top five percent of their class, and have “exceptional financial need” as certified by their undergraduate institution’s financial office.
