The New Israel Fund SHATIL Social Justice Fellowship places recipients in an individually selected Israeli non-governmental organization for ten months, working in one of the following areas: civil and human rights, environmental justice, Jewish-Arab equality, the status of women, tolerance and religious pluralism, social and economic inequality.
Fellows also engage in monthly enrichment programs and periodic site visits to further develop their understanding of Israel, Israeli activism, and their own roles as activists both in Israel and at home. In addition, fellows receive training in leadership and community development, as well as a modest stipend to cover living expenses.
Eligibility
Candidates must be U.S. or Canadian residents who will have graduated from college by the beginning of their fellowship year. Successful applicants must also have either excellent Hebrew language skills or good Hebrew and excellent Arabic skills. The program seeks candidates with a commitment to social justice in general and to a just and equitable society in Israel in particular; it also seeks personal qualities such as independence, integrity, an ability to work well with others, and ease in adapting to culturally diverse work and living environments.
Prior to departure to Israel, fellows are asked to raise $1,000 or more for the New Israel Fund, both to support its advocacy work and to help sustain the fellowship program.
