The Austrian government’s U.S. English Language Teaching Assistantship Program provides opportunities for U.S. college graduates to work for a year as linguistic and cultural ambassadors in secondary schools throughout Austria. Placements involve approximately 15 hours of teaching each week, under the guidance of a licensed teacher and a program supervisor. Teaching assistants attend an orientation program before the school year starts and receive a monthly stipend of about €1,100, after deductions for health insurance and income tax.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens, have a bachelor’s degree by the time they would take up their positions, and ideally have career interests in education or public service. Prospective teachers of foreign languages or of English as a second or other language are especially encouraged to apply. All applicants must have a working knowledge of German. Approximately 130 applicants are selected for the program each year.
Note: This program is virtually identical to the Fulbright U.S. Student Programs English Teaching Assistantships in Austria but is administered as a distinct program.
