Columbia College is pleased to share information about an enhanced resource for Columbia undergraduates, Undergraduate Research and Fellowships. Led by Ariella Lang, associate dean of Academic Affairs and director of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, and Jodi Zaffino, assistant dean of Academic Affairs, Fellowship Programs, this team will provide advising for fellowship opportunities, while also building support for independent and group research projects. You can learn more about the work of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships on their new website.
As Fellowships moves forward with its transition from Global Programs to Undergraduate Research and Fellowships, the College would like to express its gratitude to Associate Dean Scott Carpenter, who has dedicated much talent and energy to building fellowships advising as well as playing a pivotal leadership role in study abroad programs. Dean Carpenter will continue to support the evolution of the Center for Undergraduate Global Engagement, while also assisting Undergraduate Research and Fellowships in order to make the transition as seamless as possible. This development comes as the Center for Undergraduate Global Engagement begins to take shape under the new leadership and forthcoming arrival of Dean Shannon Marquez. These changes, in turn, have offered the opportunity to bring fellowships advising back into the area of Academic Affairs, linking it to the full undergraduate curriculum and positioning the work closely with faculty members and academic advisers. By supporting relationships with faculty mentors, building programs for students led by faculty and librarians, and establishing even more connections between academic pursuits and special opportunities, Undergraduate Research and Fellowships will be an important resource for students who want to pursue their intellectual passions beyond the classroom.
Located in 202 Hamilton Hall, Undergraduate Research and Fellowships will provide advising and programming for students from Columbia College, Columbia Engineering and the School of General Studies, with collaboration across all three undergraduate schools. Advising sessions and appointments with students are open and filling up, so students are encouraged to take a look at the calendar of events and deadlines.
