Columbia University has once again been named a top-producing institution for the Fulbright U.S. Student Program, coming in the top ten with 28 awardees in 2023–24. Columbia is one of several institutions that has been named a top-producing Fulbright institution for over a decade.

Columbia’s 2023-2024 awardees included 22 undergraduate affiliates, of whom 19 accepted the award, including 17 alumni of the College. As Fulbrighters, these affiliates are this year pursuing independent research, postgraduate studies or English Teaching Assistantships, in locations ranging from South Korea to Morocco to Mexico to France, and they’ll be pursuing professional and academic objectives in fields from educational reform to computational neuroscience.

“We are thrilled that Columbia has been named a top-producing Fulbright institution, and we know why: our students are future changemakers and thought leaders who embrace the global cooperation that the Fulbright fosters,” said Ariella Lang, associate dean of Academic Affairs and director of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships.

Established in 1946, The Fulbright U.S. Student Program awards approximately 2,200 grants annually for individually designed study/research projects or for English Teaching Assistant Programs. The Fulbright Program is one of several United States Cultural Exchange Programs whose goal is to improve mutual understanding, cultural diplomacy, and intercultural competence between the people of the United States and other countries through the exchange of persons, knowledge and skills. It is the most widely recognized and prestigious international exchange program in the world.

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide and facilitates cultural exchange through direct interaction on an individual basis in the classroom, field, home and in daily life. Through engagement in the community, Fulbrighters interact with their hosts on a one-to-one basis in an atmosphere of openness, academic integrity and intellectual freedom, thereby promoting mutual understanding. Fulbright alumni work to make a positive impact on their communities, sectors, and the world and have included 41 heads of state or government, 62 Nobel Laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize winners, 78 MacArthur Fellows, and countless leaders and changemakers who carry forward the Fulbright mission. Congratulations to our 2023–24 Columbia Fulbrighters!
