Congratulations to Sara Wahedi GS’24 who has recently been named a Clarendon Scholar!
Each year, the University of Oxford offers Clarendon Scholarships to 200+ outstanding graduate students, selected for their academic merit and potential. In addition to the full-tuition funding and living stipend provided through the scholarship, the community of Clarendon Scholars at Oxford offers a thriving, internationally diverse and multidisciplinary Scholar network to connect with, both during their time at Oxford and beyond.
At Columbia, Sara pursued a major in urban studies and concentration in architecture, focusing on technology, law, and policy, which she will continue to deepen her understanding of while at Oxford. Beyond her studies, Sara spent her summers in Cupertino, California, interning for Apple within the artificial intelligence and machine learning teams, while simultaneously continuing her work throughout the year as the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Ehtesab, Afghanistan's first civic-technology startup. Ehtesab’s flagship platform, the 'Ehtesab App', launched in March 2020, serving as a nationwide alert system, platform for crowdsourced reports, and capturing human rights infringements across Afghanistan. To date, the Ehtesab App has sent over a quarter of a million alerts to its users across Afghanistan and is presently advancing a feature dedicated to recording 'gender apartheid' instances, aiming to strengthen the recognition of gender apartheid as an actionable offense in international jurisprudence. With a vision for 2025, Sara intends to extend the platform's reach to other crisis regions globally.
Columbia students and alums interested in learning more about the Clarendon Scholarship and other fellowship programs are encouraged to connect with advisors at Undergraduate Research and Fellowships.
