Sponsored by the City of New York and administered by the Department of Citywide Administrative Services, New York City Urban Fellows is a nationally recognized and highly competitive, nine-month fellowship program that explores current urban issues through unique learning seminars and first-hand exposure to public sector leaders. Urban Fellows are placed at an array of agencies across the City where they learn about public policy and work closely with leaders engaged in policy and operational work.

Alan Chen, CC’25, is a senior majoring in History with a concentration in Philosophy. Born and raised in Northern California, he is deeply interested in family policy, child welfare, and marital and parental protections. While at Columbia, Alan has served as the editor-in-chief of the Columbia Political Review, a co-chair of the Columbia Mentoring Initiative, a Rose Research Fellow, an orientation leader, and a tour guide. Alan completed a senior thesis on nineteenth-century French utopian socialist thought and its treatment of the family. As an NYC Urban Fellow, Alan intends to work in family and public policy.
