Madeline Wiseman, CC’26, awarded fully-funded Barry Scholarship for postgraduate study at the University of Oxford
Congratulations to Madeline Wiseman, CC’26, who has been awarded the John & Daria Barry Scholarship for study at the University of Oxford!
The John & Daria Barry Scholarship supports graduate study at the University of Oxford across all disciplines and degree programs. Awarded in recognition of a student’s commitment to scholarship and the pursuit of truth, it provides full funding for at least two years of study. Supported by the John and Daria Barry Foundation, the scholarship is an initiative of the Canterbury Institute, an Oxford-based charity dedicated to renewing the academic vocation.
Originally from Woodland Park, Colorado, Madeline Wiseman will graduate from Columbia College this spring with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. Following her undergraduate studies, she will pursue two years of graduate study at the University of Oxford as a John & Daria Barry Scholar, where she will read for an MSc by Research in Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics at St Cross College.
Madeline’s commitment to research began early in her undergraduate career. As a rising sophomore, she was selected for the inaugural cohort of the BRAIN Initiative and began conducting research in the Rice Lab at NYU Grossman School of Medicine under the mentorship of Dr. Margaret Rice and Dr. Jyoti Patel. Her work, which examined how brain cells communicate, resulted in a publication in Cell Reports and was presented at the American Academy of Neurology’s annual conference in 2024. Building on this foundation, Madeline will join the Cragg Group at the University of Oxford, where she will study the brain and its role in conditions such as Parkinson’s disease.
In addition to her academic accomplishments, Madeline served as co-president of the Columbia Catholic Ministry and was actively engaged in interreligious dialogue across campus. She also contributed to clinical volunteer work at NYU Langone Health and Calvary Hospital, which she will continue this summer through Project Healthcare at Bellevue Hospital.
