Provides paid ten-week summer research experiences in astrophysics with Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory scientists

The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO) Internships Program provides paid ten-week summer research experiences in astrophysics with SAO and Harvard University scientists in Cambridge, MA. Potential areas of research include observational and theoretical cosmology, extragalactic and galactic astronomy, interstellar medium and star formation, laboratory astrophysics, supernovae and supernova remnants, planetary science, and solar and stellar astrophysics.

Each internship carries a stipend of $4,500 and also provides for housing and travel to Cambridge. The program also includes weekly lectures, field trips, and workshops specifically designed for its participants.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, must be returning students in an undergraduate degree program, and must be interested in a career in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or related physical sciences. Seniors who will be graduating in June in the year of application are not eligible.
