Isakowitz Fellows Summer '23

Matthew Isakowitz Fellowship winners: L-R: Tycho Bogdanowitsch SEAS'24; Swati Ravi CC'22

Columbia University celebrates the many prestigious honors that students have received for summer 2023. Congratulations to all student recipients on your impressive achievements!

MATTHEW ISAKOWITZ FELLOWSHIP

Two College affiliates have been selected for the Matthew Isakowitz Fellowship Program, which connects exceptional current college juniors, seniors, and graduate students with paid, summer internships in the exciting field of commercial spaceflight, as well as with notable aerospace leaders for mentorship.

Swati Ravi CC’22, of Plano, Texas, attended Columbia as a Science Research Fellow, majoring in astrophysics. At Columbia, Swati served as Co-President of the Columbia Space Initiative, spearheading multiple research projects. Swati is currently pursuing an MSc in Space, Science and Technology at University College Dublin through the Mitchell Scholarship. This summer, Swati will be working in the "Destinations Safety and Mission Assurance" division of Sierra Space for their Orbital Reef project. She especially looks forward to participating in the culminating 3-day summit, which features tours of space companies, talks from space industry experts, and a chance to meet other fellows and alums across a wide range of the commercial space industry.

Tycho Bogdanowitsch SEAS’24, originally from Bergen Country, NJ, is a mechanical engineering major. He is a current Co-President of the Columbia Space Initiative, where he leads the development of the fluid propulsion system for their hybrid rocket, and works to inspire the next generation of space enthusiasts through outreach and mentoring programs. He has experience in the aerospace industry as a Phillips Space Scholar at the Air Force Research Lab and as a Space Environments Engineering Intern at Maxar, working on space debris protection methods at both. This summer, he will intern at Vast Space, working on propulsion for the Orbiter team. He looks forward to working on flight hardware that will be launched into space in 2024.

ROOSEVELT NETWORK FELLOWSHIP

Two College students have been chosen for Roosevelt Network Fellowship programs. the Roosevelt Network develops and supports undergraduate college students and early career professionals—in particular, those who hold identities that have historically been denied political power—to be the next generation of leaders in the progressive policy ecosystem.

Crystal Foretia CC’23, a history and political science double major originally from Silver Spring, MD, has been admitted to the Emerging Fellowship Program. The Roosevelt Network’s most advanced policy and research fellowship, the Emerging Fellowship is an academic-year-long opportunity in which students engage in deep research and writing skills training, concluding with the publication of a policy brief. At Columbia, Crystal has held leadership positions at Columbia Undergraduate Law Review and Columbia University Democrats. Crystal is a 2021 Navab Fellow and a 2022 Saltzman Student Scholar. She previously interned for the U.S. House Committee on the Judiciary and the Center for American Progress.

Victor Jandres Rivera CC’24, an ethnicity & race studies and human rights double major originally from Richmond, VA, has been admitted to the Roosevelt in Washington Fellowship Program. The RIW fellowship offers each student guided mentorship and career exploration events. Grounded in experiential learning, rising juniors or seniors are placed in a summer internship within a progressive movement organization while also working in teams on a policy proposal. At Columbia, Victor has held leadership positions at Students for Sanctuary and the Students of Color Advisory Board. Victor is a 2021 Laidlaw Scholar. In his research and service work, he has focused on immigrant access to education and health and human services.

DAAD RISE

Two College students and one Columbia Engineering student were chosen for the DAAD Research Internships in Science and Engineering (RISE) program, a summer internship program for undergraduates in biology, chemistry, physics, earth sciences, and engineering. Recipients work with research groups at universities and top research institutions across Germany for a period of two to three months during the summer.

Taylor Briggs CC’24, a physics major, will pursue research at RWTH Aachen University.

Elizabeth Katzman SEAS’24, a chemical engineering major, will carry out research at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.

Arman Ozcan CC’25, a computer science and mathematics major, will conduct research at RWTH Aachen University.
